Eldritch Witchery Dead Tree, and the Future of ELG!

Image
Eldritch Witchery , the long-awaited second sourcebook for Spellcraft & Swordplay , is now available in print format over at Drivethrurpg . It's been selling like crazy, which is really gratifying. It is a grand sourcebook, too--the page count is higher than that of the core rulebook, and the author, the esteemed Timothy Brannan, has really outdone himself. In fact, the book is selling well enough that it's given Tim and I, and our new editor Derek, cause to re-evaluate S&S as a viable property. So keep your eyes open, folks--there's now definitely more on the horizon, from sourcebooks to adventure modules, and we have plans for more Basic Edition stuff too, perhaps even some dual-statted books. And maybe, just maybe, a unique campaign setting from a familiar name in the RPG Industry. I don't want to give out too much information at this time; as you all know we try to avoid being one of those publishers who promises and doesn't deliver, and nothing is ...

Review: Original Dungeons & Dragons Premium Reprint

Image
(Stock Image) Source: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/Product.aspx?x=dnd/products/dndacc/45390000 Introduction To put a crown jewel on their “Premium Reprint,” series, Wizards of the Coast has re-released the original Dungeons & Dragons rules. Specifically, this reprint is of the sixth printing, or “OCE” (Original Collector’s Edition) version of the rules. Like many fans of the old school, I was rather excited and more than a little nervous about this product. For $150, would they screw it up? Would it be handled properly? Would it, unlike the reprints for second and third editions, truly be premium? Yesterday, I headed to my FLGS and picked up my OD&D Premium Reprint. Here are my thoughts. Presentation This set is really nice. It comes in an actual wooden box, a nice nod to the original rules which came in a printed woodgrain box. The box construction is sturdy and just overall excellent. It has a nice velvet pad on the bottom to keep from scratching...

Beauty, Peace, and Game Design: Post-Gen-Con Musings

I've been back from Gen Con for a couple days, now, and anyone who follows me on Facebook knows that despite having a tough time getting pumped for the con beforehand, I had a pretty great experience this year. As always, the con went too fast and I was sad it was over, but I met some awesome fans and had an awesome time at the Troll Lord Games booth. Very excited about the prospects for the future. There are some very exciting developments in the works for Amazing Adventures , but until we have a bit more in the way of concrete development I can't say just what, yet. Also had a great time at the Eden Studios booth Friday with George Vasilakos and crew - awesome to finally see Band of Zombies in print, and George an d I came up with a great idea for my next AFMBE book as well! Again, until there's something more concrete I can't say just what, but I'm really digging the idea. I'm eternally grateful to Joseph Wolz, Chris and Nicky Helmkamp, and Kevin Dea...

What D&D Character Are You?

Find out What Kind of Dungeons and Dragons Character Would You Be? , courtesy of Easydamus (e-mail) This may be the best one of these I've seen yet. Fair warning, though: There's 129 questions to answer, and some of them can get a bit uncomfortable. Still, I'd say these results are pretty damned accurate for me. I'm impressed! I Am A: Neutral Good Human Bard (5th Level) Ability Scores: Strength- 14 Dexterity- 16 Constitution- 11 Intelligence- 14 Wisdom- 14 Charisma- 13 Alignment: Neutral Good A neutral good character does the best that a good person can do. He is devoted to helping others. He works with kings and magistrates but does not feel beholden to them. Neutral good is the best alignment you can be because it means doing what is good without bias for or against order. However, neutral good can be a dangerous alignment when it advances mediocrity by limiting the actions of the truly capable. Race: Humans are the most adaptable of the common ...

Seriously Considering Kickstarter

Question for all of our fans and followers out there. As many of you are aware, ELG is in a bit of a holding pattern right now due to the lack of funds to "do it right," as it were. If I were to do a Kickstarter to fund a second edition of S&S which would commission professional artwork, clean up the rules and formatting, and basically take Elf Lair to the next level as a professional company, would you support the effort? I'd be interested in feedback on what kinds of level rewards you'd like to see, what YOU want out of the company, and how much you'd be willing to commit. So you're aware of where I can go with this, aside from doing Spellcraft & Swordplay properly, I have a science fiction game entitled Twelve Parsecs in the wings, as well as an urban fantasy game which is still in the conceptual stages. Both of these latter games would use an updated and revised version of the O.R.C.S. system, which would likely also make its way into the second ed...
